Tools for Ro Tools for Furo

The tools ( Dōgu 道具) for the charcoal ceremony, differ in use in the Furo (風炉 for summer) or in the Ro (炉 for winter). The Furo is a raised or portable bronze or ceramic fireplace (traditionally used from May to October) and the Ro is a fireplace sunk into the ground and lined with clay for the period from November to April.

For the fragrance ( Kō 香 ), different materials are used, depending on the Ro or Furo. In summer, small leaves of fragrant woods are laid on the fire (e.g. Byakudan sandalwood or the expensive Jinkō eaglewood). One stores these woods in one Kōgo 香合, a small container from lacquer work (Kōgo for Furo). The more heavily combustible Kō in the winter, which consists of milled and with oils and humidity to small balls kneaded smell woods, one keeps better in one Kōgo from ceramics or porcelain (Kōgo for Ro)

The fire sticks for the Furo in the Somme (Furo Hibashi 風炉 火箸) are made entirely from metal. In winter, when the fire is stronger and the host has to reach deep into the sunken fireplace, the fire sticks (Ro Hibashi 炉 火箸) have wooden handles (e.g. mulberry tree). In the preparation room or to prepare the fireplace when the guests are not yet present, the Mizuya Hibashi 水屋 火箸 is used, long metal sticks wrapped with bamboo as a handle.

Also the feathers (Hane 羽) for cleaning the fireplace differ depending on the season. Habōki 羽箒 - feather broom - for cleaning the fireplace differs in the use of the right and left feathers. As feathers the wing feathers of large birds, e.g. of wild ducks are used. On the Furo Habōki the right half of the feather is wider, on the Ro Haboki the left half.

As Haboki use the right feather for the Fu Ro and the left feather for the Ro.
