The highest quality Chasen has been produced for centuries in the city of Takayama in the Japanese Alps. Chasen made in Japan are more expensive than Chasen from China, but are usually more carefully crafted and have a longer shelf life. In Japan, relatively thin bamboo is used for the Chasen, which lies better in the hand than a thicker Chinese Chasen.
The highest quality always comes in paper boxes in which they are glued.
