CHAWAN - tea bowl

The Chawan used in the tea ceremony for Matcha, the powder tea, are larger than our European tea bowls. They must be large enough to make the tea frothy in the bowl. They are made of ceramic and not fine porcelain. Porcelain bowls get too hot and according to Japanese opinion are not good to handle. Porcelain bowls are however well suitable for the infusion tea.Good tea bowls are small works of art that are often passed on over long periods of time. They become more and more beautiful through intensive use.
